Then, we completed The Cell As a School analogy chart on the back of the Cell City Chart from yesterday. Students could relate the parts of the cell to structures and components of our school building, or else choose a different location to compare, such as a mall, an airport, a military base, sports arena, vehicle, or the human body. The key was that whatever the choice, students had to compare it with common cell structures and organelles.
Today we continued discussion over the "parts" (a.k.a, organelles) of cells. We began with a Bellringer where we unscrambled vocabulary terms and paired them with key words. (See below.) Next, we continued with our analogy, or comparison, of cells to things we're more familiar with, like cities, factories, and schools. We watched the super-short BrainPOP -- "Cell Structures" video and then labeled cell organelles and answered 10 multiple-choice Check-for-Understanding questions to gauge our readiness for Friday's upcoming assessment over cells.
