Flower Power Lab

An environmental scientist is worried that his neighbor could be hurting the wildflowers growing on the banks of a nearby stream because of the soap he uses to wash his car. When the neighbor rinses the soapy water off his car, it runs down his driveway and into the street, into the storm drain, and eventually empties into the nearby stream. The scientist needs to test to see if the soap has a harmful effect on the growth of the plants. Help him set up his experiment below by selecting an experimental group to test and a control group to compare against, as well as constants (things that stay the same).

    1. What was the Problem/Question being tested in the experiment?
    2. What was the scientist's Hypothesis, or prediction, before the experiment began?
    3. What was the Independent Variable (the variable that was manipulated, or changed, by the experimenter)?
    4. What was the Dependent Variable (the variable that responded to the change, and was observed/measured)?
    5. Identify the Constants (those things that have to stay the same for the experiment to be fair).
    6. What Conclusion can be drawn? EXPLAIN the data/evidence that supports that conclusion.
